“American Beauty”, by Sam Mendes, isn’t the last film I’ve seen and isn't also my favorite film. But it is a good film, and I like it very much. I saw it because I listened to talk about it, and I was interested for it.
It was the winner of five Oscars, for example the best film (in 2000), the best director or the best script.
This film is a strong critic about the American way of life. It is about a currently family, apparently. But through the film, we realise that Lester (the main character) is very unhappy. His wife tries to manipulate him and also she is unfaithful, and is dating with another man, her “idol”. Their teenage daughter, Jane, feels very estrange, but her situation changes when she knows her neighbor, Ricky Fitts, who is living with her homophobic father. While all this is happening, Lester feels very attracted by her daughter’s best (or only) friend, Angela. This girl is very beautiful, and a little bit special, because she always talks about her adventures with many men, and this is another reason why Jane feels so low and ugly.
When the film starts, we know that the main character, Lester, is dead. But the film doesn’t lose the interest at any moment.

I like very much this film, and I know that it’s very difficult to explain it, because there are many themes to talk about and debate it, and the synopsis is a little bit complicate. But I think it’s a very good film, and I like it because every time I see it, I discover new details and new questions that the director wants to explain. Another reason is that I like very much the things that criticise something, and this film is a good critic, and a reflection about how we are living now and which are our values.
